“ The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”

The moon has been a source of fascination and wonder for human beings since time immemorial. It has been a subject of mythology, poetry, and scientific inquiry. The moon has also been an important celestial body in astrology, where it is believed to have a profound affect our moods, emotions, your menstrual cycle and even our destiny. One of the most interesting aspects of the moon in astrology is its phases, which really means, the moon relationship to the sun.
In this blog, we will explore the four phases of the moon and then how one of these phases is the phase in which you were born under, called your natal moon phase, and how that phase can give you vital into our personality and life path.
As women, we are especially attuned to the moon’s energy, as our menstrual cycles are synced with the lunar cycle. So, it’s no wonder that the moon has been revered for centuries as a symbol of femininity, intuition, and magic. Did you also know that the word menstruation comes from the latin word ‘menses’ meaning moon! Even the ancients knew this stuff!
First things first, let’s get to know our lunar phases.
The moon goes through four distinct phases during its 29.5-day cycle. These phases are the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, Disseminating, third quarter, and balsamic moons. Each phase lasts about seven days, although this can vary slightly depending on the exact timing of each lunar cycle.
New Moon. The new moon occurs when the moon is between the sun and the earth. It is not visible from the earth because the illuminated side of the moon is facing away from us. This is the beginning of the cycle, representing new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s the spark or birth of the light out of the darkness. It’s a time for planting seeds, setting intentions, and visualising what we want to manifest in our lives.
On a side note… It is always nice to add the words: “With Ease & Grace” to your intentions because without it sometimes getting kicked in the arse or slapped in the face by spirit will and often does occur (I’m speaking from experience here!).
“How we begin every cycle in life is how that cycle unfolds.”
Waxing Crescent. This is when a small sliver of the illuminated side of the moon becomes visible. It is a time of growth, development, and progress. This is a good time to focus on your intentions, revisit them and revise is necessary. Then begin planning the action you will take towards achieving your intention.
1st Quarter Moon. I know I know, 1st Qtr? But the moon is literally cut in half… Confusing much? Let me clarify… The first “quarter” occurs when the moon is one-quarter of the way through its cycle (not referring to the shape of the moon). It is a time of challenge, decision-making, overcoming obstacles and most importantly “action” taken towards your intention. This is a good time to assess your progress towards your desires and make any necessary adjustments.
Gibbious Moon. The waxing gibbous occurs when the moon is more than half illuminated. It is a time of refinement, adjustment, and preparation. This is a good time to fine-tune your plans and strategies. Make those last minute tweeks to your intention and how you want it to become manifest in the next Full Moon phase.
Full Moon. Come howl at the moon with me sister!
The full moon occurs when the moon is completely illuminated. The sun and moon are on opposite sides of the Earth and in opposite signs in the astrological wheel. It is a time of culmination, celebration, and realisation. This is a good time to reap the rewards of your hard work and reflect on your achievements. Your intention here will become manifest, or fully illuminated but honestly it is often or never as you would have expected, and, if we have asked for something at new moon that is being blocked in your life for many reasons, often what will show up between new moon and full moon is everything in your life that is stopping this intention becoming manifest. Then at full moon you maybe hit with a HUGE unconscious program that is stopping you say: Attract love, or Create Wealth & Abundance…
Journal through the whole cycle and take note of what is arising, even if it doesn’t seem to be related, you will probably find it is!
Disseminating Moon. The waning gibbous occurs when the illuminated part of the moon begins to shrink. It is a time of release, letting go, and surrender. This is a good time to release any negative emotions or habits that are holding you back. The energy here draws on all the wisdom and knowledge gained through the waxing or growing phases of the cycle. This helps us gain clarity about what no longer serves us so that it can be released, and also allows for what we have learnt to be disseminated or shared with the wider world. A great time for the presenting that speech.
Last or 3/4 Quarter Moon. The third quarter occurs when the moon is three-quarters of the way through its cycle. It is a time of reflection, evaluation, and assessment. This is a good time to review your progress and make plans for the future. The Third Quarter moon brings an opportunity for deep introspection so that any necessary adjustments can be made prior to moving into the last and final phase of the moons cycle.
Balsamic Moon. Sometimes called the waning crescent moon, this occurs when only a small sliver of the illuminated side of the moon is visible. The balsamic moon phase is all about letting go, releasing, and surrendering. It is a time of rest, rejuvenation, and preparation for the new cycle which will be birthed at new moon. This is a good time to reflect on the past cycle and start to feel into your intentions for the next cycle ahead.
The Dark Moon… This phase could be referred to at the death phase of the lunation cycle, and in all cycles for that matter. It occurs at the end of the Balasamic phase as the energy moves towards birthing the light of the new moon. For 3days every lunation cycle the moon is not visible. These 3 days are the ending of the balsamic phase and into the new moon phase. Technically the new moon begins when the first rays of light are birthed from the darkness, however the Dark Moon & the New Moon are often referred to as the one and the same (the birth and the rebirth).
I see it a little differently… I celebrate the Dark moon phase on the 2 days before the new moon peak each month. During the dark moon (where there is no light) and for the 1day post new moon peak, this is believed to be a time of great spiritual potential, where we can go deep within ourselves to access our subconscious and connect with the unseen realms. It is a time for inner reflection, meditation, releasing the last dregs from this cycle and deep soulful rest.
The dark moon is thus as a potent time for spiritual work, as it is a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is thinnest. This is a time when shamans and healers often perform their ceremonies, rituals, and divination to receive messages from the spirit world.
In essence, the dark moon and new moon are intimately connected, as the darkness of the former gives birth to the light of the latter. It is a time to embrace the unknown, to trust in the process of creation, and to allow the seeds of our intentions to grow roots and begin to germinate in the fertile darkness of the void.
Your Natal Moon
So what about my natal moon phase, you ask?
Well, my dear, it’s like a little snapshot of your soul, giving you insight into your emotional needs, instincts, and life purpose.
Your natal moon phase is determined by the phase of the moon at the exact moment of your birth.
If you were born during the new moon phase, you’re probably a total boss babe, independent, self-motivated, and focused on personal growth. If you were born under a full moon, you’re likely a social butterfly, empathetic, and focused on relationships and harmony.
Knowing your natal moon phase can help you understand yourself and your soul’s purpose. It can also help you navigate the lunar cycle and take advantage of the energies that are most supportive of your goals and intentions.
For example, if you were born under the crescent mooon phase, you may find that this time of the lunar cycle is especially productive and energising. It’s the perfect time to set intentions, make plans, and take action towards your dreams.
But don’t worry, Sister, if you don’t know your natal moon phase, I’ve got you covered.
Calculating it is as easy as pie (mmh, pie!), simply find out the phase of the moon on the day and time of your birth, and voila! You can find tons of natal moon phase calculators online, so don’t hesitate to give it a try. My favourite and the one I find the most accurate can be found at: https://astrostyle.com/cosmic-calculators/moon-phase/ Ignore the sign of your moon below this as they use a different house system which can be a little confusing.
